Narcissism and Entitlements

What do uncommitted sexual relationships, obsession with celebrities, school shootings, the rise of incivility, skyrocketing consumer debt, and people making a public spectacle of themselves on YouTube have in common? According to some psychiatrists, each of these cultural phenomena is caused at least in part by an epidemic of narcissism. Narcissists tend to believe that they are more important than everybody else, and are entitled to special privileges.

A new book called The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement by Jean M. Twenge and W. Keith Campbell explains how that reality TV, YouTube, advertising, and other aspects of modern culture promote the further spread of narcissism. Because narcissists enjoy the spotlight, they are overrepresented in reality TV and other media, and this promotes a general acceptance of narcissism. The epidemic is not just a media‑inspired trend. In elementary school, children are given curricula that focus on loving oneself instead of loving others.

Listen to Phyllis on the "Allman in the morning" radio show

Phyllis Schlafly will be a guest on Allman in the morning (guest host Dana Loesch), Friday, July 31, 8:10 a.m.

We will discuss Phyllis' most recent article Reading the Fine Print in the Health Care Bill

An excerpt: The House Democrats' health care bill is titled America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009. No clue is given as to how long we'll have a choice, but it will probably be only until the "public option" chases private insurance out of business. The bill's subtitle states its purpose as health care for everyone, reducing "the growth in health care spending . . . and for other purposes." Note that the goal is to reduce only the "growth" in spending, and we need to worry about the "other purposes" that will be added by the bureaucrats' rules.

Keeping a Bad Bill Bad: Democratic Leaders Block 31 Common-Sense Changes to Health Care Bill

Washington, Jul 28 - The Democratic leadership in Congress appears determined to produce a costly, job-killing health care bill that few outside the Washington Beltway support. For evidence, one need only look at the long list of common-sense changes House Republicans proposed this month while the bill was being considered by the Ways & Means, Energy & Commerce, and Education & Labor Committees. These amendments, which were designed to make the health care bill more palatable to the American people, were unceremoniously crushed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her committee chairmen with little public attention or debate. Here are 31 common-sense health care amendments that were offered by Republican legislators in committee, but killed by the Democratic leadership:

- Stop the government-run health plan. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) offered an amendment to improve the Democratic legislation by taking out the section of the bill that would create a government-run health plan to compete with private sector health plans. Reps. Phil Roe (R-TN) and John Kline (R-MN) offered similar amendments in the Education & Labor Committee. The GOP amendments were all killed in committee at the behest of Speaker Pelosi and her chairmen. Read more here.

Obama’s Science Czar Said a Born Baby ‘Will Ultimately Develop Into a Human Being’

President Obama’s top science adviser said in a book he co-authored in 1973 that a newborn child “will ultimately develop into a human being” if he or she is properly fed and socialized.

“The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth, and given the essential early socializing experiences and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth, will ultimately develop into a human being,” John P. Holdren, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote in “Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions.”

Holdren co-authored the book with Stanford professors Paul R. Ehrlich and Anne H. Ehrlich. The book was published by W.H. Freeman and Company. Read more here

Alert from the Hill: Gassroosts Should Be Skeptical of "Deal" to Delay Floor Vote

Despite Rollcall announcing a "deal" that a floor vote on the Obamacare will not happen until after the August recess, the grassroots should be skeptical. It's possible that the Energy and Commerce committee could pass the 1000+ page Obamacare bill out of committee today, and vote floor vote could happen before the end of the week.

Hundreds of Citizens Voice Opposition to Obamacare at MO Townhall

Americans for Prosperity organized a Town Hall meeting with MO Sen. McCaskill's aide Monday night in St. Louis, MO. The turnout was estimated to be around 500 people. The footage below is a great example of how important attending Town Hall meetings during the August recess.

Chavez Gives a Book to Obama

In April, Venezuelan President Hugo Ch†vez personally gave President Barack Obama a book written in 1971 that is very anti-American and anti-capitalist. The name of the book is Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent by Eduardo Galeano. The theme of this book is that Europe and the United States are to blame for the political corruption and poverty in Latin America.

After the news came out about Hugo Ch†vez's gift to President Obama, this book called Open Veins skyrocketed up Amazon.com's bestseller list, from number 54,000 to the number-two best seller. However, what's really important about this book is that for years it has been widely used on U.S. college campuses. Fox News interviewed numerous professors of Latin-American history who praised the book and said they frequently assign it to teach the evils of imperialism. "Millions of [U.S.] students ... learned their own history from teachers who draw their lesson plans directly from its pages." Those who are critical of this book say that it presents false history, that it is just a lot of propaganda, a mix of selective facts, exaggeration, falsehoods, caricature, and conspiracy theory.

"Social-justice teaching" is really shorthand for opposition to American traditions of individual liberty and free-enterprise economics. It teaches students that American society is an 'oppressive' society that discriminates institutionally against women, nonwhites, working Americans, and the poor.

Colleges Are a One-Party Classroom

It should come as no surprise that American universities are dominated by leftwing professors. But the extent to which many teachers seek to indoctrinate their students and draw them into radical activism will amaze you.

This is documented in the new book called One-Party Classroom: How Radical Professors at America's Top Colleges Indoctrinate Students and Undermine Our Democracy by David Horowitz and Jacob Laksin. They have painstakingly researched the course offerings and teaching methods at 12 major universities. Their research reveals an aggressive leftwing bias in the classroom, as well as a total unwillingness of the faculty and professors to address the lack of academic freedom.

The funniest passage in the book concerns Horowitz's attempts to convince Penn State University that some of the college courses violate the university's own academic standards. The university's policy requires that when professors present controversial material, they stay within their field of study and set forth several different opinions, allowing the students to think for themselves. When Horowitz sent his critique of certain courses to several members of the administration, he received a reply suggesting that certain topics necessitate a certain point of view. Evidently many universities do not see the one-sided nature of their courses as a problem.

Television Peddles Anti-Dad Bias

Fathers used to be respected, both in real life and on television. A long-running sit-com called "Father Knows Best," starring Robert Young, was very popular in the 1950s. But then the radical feminists set out to demonize fathers, to make them at best irrelevant, and at worst a cad who deserves to be kicked around and insulted. They coined the epithet "Deadbeat Dads" to make people believe that divorced fathers are failing to do their duty in supporting their children.

Now a television network called Lifetime TV has sunk to a new low by planning to air a reality program called "Deadbeat Dads." It centers around a character who chases and confronts dads who do not pay child support. The "reality" show is out of touch with reality. The fact is that more than 90% of divorced fathers with joint custody paid the support that is due, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Most of the so-called deadbeat dads actually have no money. According to government statistics, two-thirds of men who fail to make child-support payments earn only poverty-level wages, and most of the others are unemployed. One prosecutor who was trying to score points with the feminists bragged that he "many times prosecuted impoverished fathers." These down-and-out fathers who have no money are often sent to debtors' prison and have their driver's license taken away as punishment, although it's obvious that such tactics cannot produce any income for father, mother or kids. Some of the dads who don't pay full child support are fathers whose ex-wife denies them the right to see their own children.

It's not likely that the TV series will be truthful about divorce and child custody because the feminists are so powerful in the media, but maybe you can protest to the sponsors of the program for airing unfair feminist propaganda.

Audit alarms economists

The San Jose newspaper reports:
As of last week, nearly 400 economists had signed a petition urging Congress and the executive branch to respect the independence of U.S. monetary policy, which is implemented by the Federal Reserve through its power to set interest rates, helping control inflation and promote stable prices and employment.

It takes something extraordinary to get that many economists to agree on anything, so we asked one of the petition's early signers, Stanford economist Darrell Duffie, what the fuss was about. ...

Duffie explained that the economists were alarmed by proposals for Congress to audit the Fed's most sensitive activities. Legislation to do that has rapidly gathered support in Congress, and the bills' sponsors say the public has a right to know how the Fed operates and to see how the nation's central bank is spending congressionally authorized bailout money.

Q Why are you and your fellow economists worried about the independence of the Federal Reserve?

A A representative in Congress, Ron Paul, proposed that the Government Accountability Office, which is Congress' investigative arm, be given authority to audit the Fed's monetary actions. There is a long-standing belief, well understood by many, that you want to have a central bank's monetary policies independent of the government.

That is mostly because they have the responsibility to prevent inflation and promote stability. Congress could have shorter-term goals and try to steer the Fed away from an effective monetary policy. It's pretty much agreed among economists that you don't want to interfere with the Fed's monetary policy.
Alarmed? The feds are spending trillions of dollars that we don't have, and nationalizing the automobile, banking, and health care industries, and this Canadian economist is alarmed that Congress wants to have a govt bank audited?

If he is really so concerned about Congress having shorter-term goals, then he should be looking at the long term consequences of the Obama health care plan and the various Obama bailouts. The Democrats seem to be trying to get reelected in 2010, while saddling future generations in debt.

It was the Federal Reserve Bank's short-sighted interest rate policies and bailouts that contributed to the current financial crisis. Perhaps it would not have been able to get away with such bad policies if it had been audited.

Montana Eagle Forum Opposes the Referendum on the Personhood Amendment

Montana Eagle Forum Opposes the Referendum on the Personhood Amendment because of the reasons set forth by James Bopp J.r, National Right to Life’s attorney, who outlined the unintended consequences in a 2007 memo that is relevant to the Montana amendment. A state law or state constitutional amendment cannot overturn the U.S. Constitution or a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court. If the Personhood Amendment were to pass, unborn babies would be in more danger than they are under Roe v. Wade because a new Court case would give the pro-abortion Justices the opportunity to change their legal theory from the one used in Roe v. Wade (the right to privacy) to the legal theory espoused for many years (including again this month) by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (that abortion should be legalized as an issue of gender discrimination). This shift in legal theory could enable judges to outlaw all pro-life laws enacted in the last 40 years, including the Hyde Amendment.

Debtors Prisons

In regard to Phyllis' column on "Injustices to Men," here is a postscript:

The local newspaper in the town of Adel, GA (population 5,307), covered this story (pdf) on page 1, and reported that the County jail (which is licensed to hold 125 people) had 140 in it, one-third (45) of whom were being held for child support at an incarceration cost to the county of $25 a day. So, how many thousands of men do you think are in debtors prison nationwide? Do you believe we should abolish debtors prisons?

Planned Parenthood Netted $1.014 billion Last Year

Why does it need a 10 million dollar increase in taxpayer funding this year?

Rep. Mike Pence’s (R-IN) amendment to the FY2010 Labor, Health, and Human Services (LHHS) Appropriations bill will withhold Title X funds from Planned Parenthood or its affiliates. Currently, LHHS contains more than $317 million for the Title X Family Planning program—a program that is a key funding source for Planned Parenthood. This funding level constitutes a $10 million increase over FY2009.

It's likely that Pence's amendment to de-fund Planned Parenthood will go to floor for a vote today.

'Story of Stuff' Teaches Anti-Capitalism

"The Story of Stuff" (storyofstuff.com) is a 20-minute movie on the evils of human consumption. Suddenly, it is being shown in classrooms at all grade levels all over the country.

Earlier this year, a parent in Missoula, Montana complained that presenting "The Story of Stuff" without providing an alternative point of view violated the district's standards on political bias in the classroom. He said "there was not one positive thing about capitalism in the whole thing." The school board accepted this criticism and voted 4-3 that teachers should present materials favorable to capitalism as well if they were going to show "The Story of Stuff" for students. Nevertheless, of the thousands of students watching "The Story of Stuff" in school, very few will hear any contrary views presented or discussed.

The author of this movie, Annie Leonard, is a former Greenpeace employee and a self-described "unapologetic activist" who is critical of corporations and the military.

Doctors Wage War Against Obama's Health Care Overhaul

As President Obama pushes for passage of his first major domestic policy change, some physicians are waging an all-out war against a health care reform bill they say amounts to nothing more than socialized medicine.

As President Obama pushes for passage of his first major domestic policy change, some physicians are waging an all-out war against a health care reform bill they say amounts to nothing more than socialized medicine.

America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 would create a public health insurance alternative and require coverage for most Americans and from most employers.

The American Medical Association -- the nation's largest physician organization with nearly 250,000 members -- initially opposed the president's plan, but backed the House Democrats' version of the bill last week. That has led to an internal dispute that has resulted in some physicians leaving the nation's largest doctors' association.

Some doctors charge the bill will lead to inferior patient care as physician offices around the country triple their patient lists and become forced to ration care.

"This is war," Dr. George Watson, a Kansas physician and president-elect of the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, told FOXNews.com Thursday. "This is a bureaucratic boondoggle to grab control of health care. Everything that has been proposed in the 1,018 page bill will contribute to the ruination of medicine." Read more here.

Secular Reasons To Be Under God

Historian and scholar William J. Federer believes that despite all the media coverage given to the minority of atheists who want to force their views on the majority of Americans, even atheists have a vested interest in upholding the concept of "under God." Federer's new book is called Three Secular Reasons Why America Should Be Under God examines the reasons America's founders referenced God and the implications if these references are removed.

Federer's first reason is that this nation was founded on the idea that men are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights." As President John F. Kennedy said in his inaugural address, "the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God." If there is no God, Federer argues, "your rights cannot come from anywhere else except from the ‘generosity of the state'"—and the state may not always be so "generous."

To hear more reasons why America should be under God, listen to my commentary.

Don't Force Coed Basketball

The parents of a 12-year-old girl named Caitlin wanted her to play on an all-boys basketball team in Ridgewood, New Jersey. In 2004, Caitlin's parents signed her up for "Biddy Basketball," a non-profit recreational league which holds practices and games in public school gymnasiums. Biddy Basketball has separate boys and girls teams, but Caitlin's parents kept trying to get her on the boys team. The league declined to honor this request.

A school official contacted several offices for civil rights and found that there was nothing discriminatory about separate teams, even though the height of the basket and the size of the ball were somewhat different. This is allowed under Title IX because, in many sports such as lacrosse, it is standard for women and men to use equipment that differs significantly in size and shape. In addition, basketball is considered a contact sport, which means that separate teams are legal.

Abruptly and without warning, the Chief of the Bureau of Enforcement at the New Jersey Department of Civil Rights told the School Board to "terminate its relationship with Biddy and stop them from using the Board of Education's facilities unless the Board of Education forced Biddy to allow C.A. to play on the boys' team." Biddy Basketball held firm in its position.

Biddy Basketball is a private organization and should not be subject to Title IX. Biddy's response also recognized the inherent differences between boys and girls, noting that the boys play "aggressively," while the girls play with "finesse". But pressures against Biddy continued to escalate until the organization was forced to permit Caitlin to play on their boys' teams. Meanwhile, however, the District Court of New Jersey held that the Board of Education did not discriminate because it merely allowed use of its gymnasiums for this activity, and that is not a sufficient basis for suing the school over the separation of boys' and girls' sports teams.

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) names names in his amendment to defund ACORN.

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) is planning on offering an amendment to prevent any funds from the Transportation-Housing-Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations bill from going to the corrupt "community organizing" group ACORN (Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now), which has been indicted in various states for voter fraud activities and is believed to have contributed to the mortgage meltown. Obama seeks greater inefficiences

They let Pres. Obama talk without reading from the teleprompter, and he let this slip:

"Everyone knew exactly what he was saying," Earnest said.
Earnest also misspoke. Yes, everyone knew what he was saying, and Obama said the wrong thing! I think Earnest meant to say that everyone knew what Obama meant.

Single-Sex Classes Gain Popularity

This summer, Houston will open its first all-girls public high school. While there were only 11 single-gender public schools in the nation in 2002, now there are over 500.

This trend was given a big boost when the U.S. Department of Education amended Title IX rules to allow single-gender classes in public schools, provided certain conditions are met and the parents and students are given freedom of choice.

The feminists and all who deny differences between boys and girls are fuming mad about this trend. The ACLU filed a lawsuit challenging the all-boys and all-girls public school classes in a Kentucky school, claiming that allowing single-gender classes unlawfully segregates children, resulting in unequal education. A federal judge dismissed the ACLU challenge on technical legal grounds.

The feminists do a lot of talking about how much they believe in choice, but they don't believe in choice about what kind of school to attend.

ACORN Should Not Receive Taxpayers' Money

The American people should demand that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which is known under its nickname ACORN, be cut off from all further handouts of taxpayers' money.

ACORN and its estimated 270 affiliated organizations are under investigation in a dozen states for voter registration fraud, and there's no question about which party and which candidate ACORN supports.

Nevertheless, ACORN and its affiliated organizations (disguised as nongovernmental "neighborhood stabilization" organizations) could receive $3 billion (with a B) from the Stimulus package passed by Congress and another $5.5 billion from his 2010 federal budget. That is after receiving $53 million of taxpayers' money over the last 15 years.

Nevada charged ACORN groups with submitting thousands of fraudulent voter registration forms in 2008, and illegally setting quotas for its canvassers. The Las Vegas registrar of voters believes 48% of registrations turned in by ACORN were fraudulent. Nevada's Democratic Attorney General said that ACORN's training manuals "clearly detail, condone and ... require illegal acts" such as requiring workers to meet voter-registration targets in order to keep their jobs.

Pennsylvania authorities charged seven ACORN workers with falsifying voter registration forms. The voter registrar said that ACORN submitted at least 1,500 fraudulent registrations during last year's presidential campaign. Washington State fined ACORN $25,000 after several employees were convicted of voter registration fraud in 2007.

It's pretty clear that ACORN , which is very partisan in its activities, should not receive any more taxpayers' money.

Couple loses baby for being uncooperative

A NJ couple had their parental rights terminated because the new mom was accused of behaving erratically in the delivery room. She refused a C-section and gave birth to a healthy baby. A CPS caseworker accused her of lying about refusing the C-section, and the dad was accused of supporting the mom's paranoia. No actual risk or harm to the baby was ever proved. There are more details here.

Zero Tolerance in Colleges, Too

I thought zero tolerance policies were only in public schools, but apparently college students face their own version of extreme “zero tolerance.” There are cases of college officials taking action against students who merely mention weapons or speak up for the right to bear arms.

At Lone Star College near Houston, Texas, administrators punished members of the Young Conservatives of Texas club for referring to firearms in fliers the club passed out to recruit new members. Lone Star administrators seized the fliers and threatened to disband the club. When the students sought legal counsel, administrators told the Young Conservatives that any “mention of firearms” caused “interference with the operation of the school or the rights of others,” by bringing “fear and concern to students, faculty and staff.” At Central Connecticut State University, a professor reported to the police a student who chose the topic of concealed carry for a class presentation. Police brought the student in for questioning. The professor defended her action in an interview with the school paper, calling the student a “perceived risk” and saying she had a “responsibility to protect the well-being of our students.”

Czarred And Feathered

Government: It's been suggested that the White House has more czars than the Russian Romanov dynasty. Has the administration forgotten that we have a government of elected officials, not of imperial appointments?

Czars, or functionaries with the task of ensuring White House commands are followed, have been part of the U.S. government for decades. It's unclear, though, how many are in this administration, as it is not an official title. PolitiFact.com from the St. Petersburg Times believes the count has swelled to as many as 28 under President Obama.

Many of these czars, most of whom are useless or counterproductive, are sitting in newly created positions. They range from Kenneth Feinberg, the pay czar who is the special master on executive compensation, to Earl Devaney, who, as the stimulus accountability czar, will chair the Recovery Act Transparency and Accountability Board. Others among the 28 include:

• Green jobs czar. This post is held by Van Jones. Officially he is Obama's special adviser for enterprise and innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Jones was a founder and leader of Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement. The group, now disbanded, had Marxist, Leninist and Maoist influences.

Jones admitted that he became a communist and radical after the officers accused of using excessive force on Rodney King were acquitted. He's supposedly a reformed anti-capitalist, but not everyone is convinced.

• TARP czar. Herb Allison is assistant secretary of the Treasury for financial stability. There's nothing alarming in his background, but there should be concerns about the position he's filling.

CNSNews.com Health Care Bill Will Fund State Vaccine Teams to Conduct ‘Interventions’ in Private Homes

There is a knock at the front door. Peeking through the window, a mother sees a man and a woman, both in uniform. They are agents of health-care reform.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” says the man. “Our records show that your eleven-year-old daughter has not been immunized for genital warts.”

“And your four-year-old still needs the chicken-pox vaccine,” says the woman.

“He will not be allowed to start kindergarten unless he gets that shot, you know,” says the man—smiling from ear to ear.

“So, can we please come in?” asks the woman. “We have the vaccines right here,” she says, lifting up a black medical bag. “We can give your kids the shots right now.”

“We are from the government,” says the man, “and we’re here to help.”

Is this a scene from the over-heated imagination of an addlepated conspiracy theorist? Or is it something akin to what is actually envisioned by the health-care reform bill approved this week by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee. Read more here.

Common Sense vs. Zero Tolerance

After several notorious school shootings during the 1990s, most public schools adopted what are called zero tolerance policies. Now, some state legislators are realizing that these policies often went to ridiculous extremes and they need a large dose of common sense. Several states are reconsidering the “zero-tolerance” policies.

In Florida, students have been arrested for bringing a plastic butter knife to school, throwing an eraser, and drawing a picture of a gun. The eleven-year-old who allegedly brought a plastic butter knife to school was handcuffed, taken to jail, and charged with a third-degree felony. Legislation recently passed unanimously by the Florida Senate could change all that by prohibiting schools from calling the police for nonviolent misdemeanors.

Texas, Rhode Island, and Utah have also attempted to improve their zero-tolerance laws in the past few years. Texas recently passed a bill allowing school officials to consider “mitigating factors” before they punish students under zero-tolerance policies. Rhode Island passed a bill allowing discretion to school officials in deciding how to punish student who bring weapons to school. Utah made an exception to its zero-tolerance policy on drugs to allow asthmatic students to bring their inhalers with them to school.

Slow the Preschool Bandwagon

President Obama has pledged to spend $10 billion more a year on "zero to five" education. Many Members of Congress want more preschool, as do dozens of governors, as well as the National Education Association. Underlying all this activity and interest is the proposition that government - both state and federal - should pay for at least a year of preschool for every American four-year-old.

Instead of launching vast new pre-K programs for all, policymakers would better serve American children by focusing on genuine problems, such as the small percentage of children who really need help. Most middle-class children are far better off in their homes than in preschool.

How New Taxes Will Be Hidden

Let examine the promise that taxes won't be raised on anyone making less than $250,000 a year. A new report by the respected Tax Foundation found that the plan called cap and trade would reduce household earnings by $38 billion a year, and reduce U.S. employment by a million jobs. Furthermore, cap and trade would be a regressive tax. The burden would disproportionately be borne by low-income households, especially the bottom 20% of income earners.

So, what's behind these anti-middle-class plans? The announced purpose is that the use of carbon-based fuels (oil, gas and coal) is increasing CO2, which is trapping heat in the atmosphere and causing the earth's temperature to rise to catastrophic levels. A cap-and-trade system to curb carbon emissions is supposed to be more politically attractive than a direct carbon tax. But it's not any cheaper. It's just a different way of levying the tax.

The Obama administration hopes that increased energy costs will force us to shift away from fossil fuels and instead use various alternatives. But what are the alternatives? Nuclear plants? The left won't tolerate that. Windmills and solar panels to capture wind and sun? They now provide less than 1 percent of our energy, so the gain can't be enough to matter. "Clean coal technology"? More likely, cap and trade would just kill the coal industry.

Don't Fall for Cap and Tax

President Barack Obama repeatedly promised that he won't raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 a year. But he neglected to mention that this tax exemption will go only to those who don't use electricity, gasoline, heating oil, or natural gas. The truth of the matter is that plans now in the works will raise taxes on practically all middle-class Americans. But that's not all; in addition to new taxes on all those necessities (just think of all the appliances in your home that use electricity), our standard of living will be drastically reduced.

Barack Obama warned during his campaign that we can no longer keep our homes set at 72 degrees (warmed in the winter and cooled in the summer). We cannot eat whatever foods we want (if, like meat and milk products, they come from cows that have to be fed), and we cannot drive SUVs (to accommodate our family and friends). Obama said we cannot continue to consume 25% of the world's resources when we have only 4% of the world's population.

But why not? Americans have built a free-enterprise, private- property, rule-of-law, respect-for-contracts, innovation-receptive society that has enabled us to enjoy the highest standard of living in the world. We designed it by adoption of our unique U.S. Constitution, we worked for our high standard of living, so why can't we enjoy the fruits of our labor?

Problems with Kennedy's Health Plan

The most unpopular features of the Kennedy plan are being kept under wraps, but here are some of the bad ideas being floated. The plan is to force young, healthy people to pay more for their insurance in order to subsidize older, less healthy people under the words modified community rating. The liberals plan to impose fines on employers who don't provide health care for their employees. This will incentivize employers to terminate their current health-benefits and simply pay the fine, which is sure to be less expensive. Another scheme being talked about is to make employees pay income tax on this benefit (which is now is tax-exempt).

The biggest way to cut health care costs is hiding under the euphemism: "comparative effectiveness research." This means that government bureaucrats will assess all health treatments to determine whether or not they are cost-effective and can be approved for payment. The real word for this is rationing. Life or death decisions will be made by bureaucrats on the basis of treatment cost and patient age, rather than by medical diagnosis.

That's the way health care works in Socialist Canada and England, but it's not the American way. Free-market competition, health savings accounts, and letting individuals spend or save their own money, are the best ways to cut health care costs.

Billions in aid go to areas that backed Obama in '08

WASHINGTON — Billions of dollars in federal aid delivered directly to the local level to help revive the economy have gone overwhelmingly to places that supported President Obama in last year's presidential election.

That aid — about $17 billion — is the first piece of the administration's massive stimulus package that can be tracked locally. Much of it has followed a well-worn path to places that regularly collect a bigger share of federal grants and contracts, guided by formulas that have been in place for decades and leave little room for manipulation.

"There's no politics at work when it comes to spending for the recovery," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says.

Counties that supported Obama last year have reaped twice as much money per person from the administration's $787 billion economic stimulus package as those that voted for his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, a USA TODAY analysis of government disclosure and accounting records shows. That money includes aid to repair military bases, improve public housing and help students pay for college.

The reports show the 872 counties that supported Obama received about $69 per person, on average. The 2,234 that supported McCain received about $34. Read more here.

What are you doing to oppose Obama's Health plan?

It's important for you to know how President Obama is drumming up support for his massive plan to impose government health care. After sending out 13 million emails, thousands of neighborhood House Meetings were held on June 6, where his supporters listened to his sales talk via a video on the internet and participated in a live conference call. Those who attended were given their orders to reach out to neighbors, knock on doors, and build a grassroots network to force Congress to pass the legislation "the same way we won the election, building support one block, one neighbor, one conversation at a time."

What are you doing to oppose Obama's Health plan?

Do We Want Government Health Care?

Obama's promise that government health care will produce "reduced costs, guaranteed choice, and quality care for all" is as phony as a $3 bill. Based on all our experience with government programs, government-managed health care will result in much higher costs, the absence of choice, and inferior care for all.

We're already getting a taste of Obama-style government by Czars, and now we are learning about government by stealth. The new legislative procedure is to write a massive piece of legislation in secret, without hearings, press coverage, open debate or public comment, and then tell Congress it's essential to hurry up and pass it quickly because "we've got to get it done this year." Only the broad structure of the bill is shared with Congress, while the details will be filled in after passage by the bureaucracy. The legislative vehicle for this health care deception is planned to be the budget reconciliation bill, which requires only 51 Senate votes for passage instead of the 60 needed to authorize new programs.

The Obama team is well aware it was the details that sank Hillary Health Care in 1994. So, goodbye to the transparency that candidate Obama promised. Although Obama has referred to "my plan," he apparently favors the plan drafted by Senator Ted Kennedy, and I'll tell you about that plan tomorrow.

Don't Sacrifice Independence to UN Treaty

The overpaid and underworked bureaucrats at the United Nations are constantly thinking up mischief that would invade U.S. sovereignty on various issues. One of the most obnoxious of these UN issues is a document called the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. In UN parlance, a convention is a not a convention at all; it is a treaty which, if we ratify would become part of the supreme law of our land and our judges would be bound thereby. This treaty has a clumsy name so it is colloquially referred to by its acronym as CEDAW. The treaty was signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1980 but, fortunately never ratified b y the U.S. Senate. For year,s it was kept in the bottom drawer by Senator Jesse Helms, but we don't have him to protect us any more. CEDAW has been pet project of Hillary Clinton, and now that she is Secretary of State, we will probably see a push to ratify it.

Among the many reasons why the U.S. Senate should vote No on CEDAW are these. First: We don't need it; American women are the most fortunate class of people who ever lived on earth, and the idea that the UN could expand our rights is downright ridiculous. Second: CEDAW, like every UN treaty, is an invasion of our sovereignty, The treaty sets up a monitoring commission of feminists (like Hillary Clinton or Barbara Boxer) who will be empowered to order us to do ridiculous things. One example is this commission's instruction to Belarus to cancel its national celebration of Mother's Day because it supposedly violates women's rights by perpetuating a negative cultural stereotype.

Foreign Law Is Un-American

Judge Robert Bork has explained that international law is really not law as Americans understand the term; it is just international politics. International law is not passed by any legislature, and is often written ex post facto and administered by foreign or UN bureaucrats pretending to be judges.

Unfortunately, some very prominent people have espoused the theory that we should bring international law into American law. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been making speeches advising lawyers that "your perspective on constitutional law should encompass the world." Justice Anthony Kennedy invoked foreign "authorities" when he couldn't find any language in the U.S. Constitution to justify overturning the Texas sodomy law. Kennedy emphasized the "values we share with a wider civilization." In fact, most other countries do not share American values, and we certainly do not want to share theirs.

It's long past time for us to rise up and put an end to this un-American nonsense. The Senate should require all judicial nominees to promise their adherence to the U.S. Constitution as written, and their rejection of the use of foreign or international law to interpret American law.

Phyllis Schlafly Comments on the Resignation of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin

After finishing out his term as Governor of California, Reagan spent four years traveling the country, speaking to groups, building support, says Phyllis Schlafly, founder of the conservative Eagle Forum. Palin "certainly is the most sought-after speaker on the Republican side at this time. She draws big crowds; anywhere she goes, she's a star. I hope she'll continue that — we need good speakers," Schlafly said in a phone interview. "It's what Reagan did to great success."

Persistent Myths in Feminist Scholarship

Christina Hoff Sommers writes:
Lemon's Domestic Violence Law is organized as a conventional law-school casebook -- a collection of judicial opinions, statutes, and articles selected, edited, and commented upon by the author. The first selection, written by Cheryl Ward Smith (no institutional affiliation is given), offers students a historical perspective on domestic-violence law. According to Ward:
"The history of women's abuse began over 2,700 years ago in the year 753 BC. It was during the reign of Romulus of Rome that wife abuse was accepted and condoned under the Laws of Chastisement. . . . The laws permitted a man to beat his wife with a rod or switch so long as its circumference was no greater than the girth of the base of the man's right thumb. The law became commonly know as 'The Rule of Thumb.' These laws established a tradition which was perpetuated in English Common Law in most of Europe."
Where to begin? How about with the fact that Romulus of Rome never existed. He is a figure in Roman mythology--the son of Mars, nursed by a wolf. Problem 2: The phrase "rule of thumb" did not originate with any law about wife beating, nor has anyone ever been able to locate any such law. It is now widely regarded as a myth, even among feminist professors.
Sommers also reports that the editor did not like having her errors pointed out, and insisted that the book is correct. A law professor should have higher standards than this.

Harold Koh Is Too Dangerous for America

Harold Koh, former dean of the Yale Law School, has been chosen to be the top lawyer at the State Department. Koh has a long record that proves he is eager to use foreign and international law to interpret American law. He calls himself a "transnationalist," which means wanting U.S. courts to "domesticate" foreign and international law. That means, integrate it into U.S. domestic law that is binding on U.S. citizens. Mr. Koh wants to put the United States under a global legal system that would diminish our "distinctive rights culture" such as our broad speech and religion rights, due process and trial by jury. Koh complains that our First Amendment gives "protections for speech and religion ... far greater emphasis and judicial protection in America" than Europe or Asia enjoy.

Yes, our Constitution does give individuals more rights and freedom than any other country, and we Americans like those rights and freedoms. But Mr. Koh thinks we should bow to foreign rules and court decisions, and to United Nations treaties whether or not we have ratified them.

What do you think? Do some people really want to make Americans subject to foreign law and courts?

Virginia Abortion Restriction Upheld

Virginia abortion restriction upheld in a contentious 6-5 decision by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. The law, which had been declared unconstitutional by a three-judge panel of the same court in 2005, bans the practice of partial birth abortion, the procedure in which the child is partially delivered from the mother’s womb before being killed. After the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the constitutionality of the federal Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, they ordered the 4th Circuit to revisit its prior ruling on Virginia’s statute. The decision ends a 6-year fight by the last five Virginia state Attorneys General in defense of the constitutionality the Virginia ban.

Patriot Academy: A Life Changing Experience

Last Saturday, Kassie Dulin, governor of Patriot Academy, spoke with Phyllis Schlafly on Eagle Forum Radio Live about the life changing experience of attending a week long worldview and political training workshop at the Texas State Capitol.

Now, I'm sure you're thinking that this couldn't possibly be. How can "life changing" and "training" at state capitol be much more than lectures and boredom? During the radio interview, Kassie explained how Patriot Academy helps students understand how they can influence public policy.

For almost a week (August 4-8), students from across the nation will learn the legislative process on the floor of the Texas State Capitol, where they will write bills and guide those bills through the legislative process, debate and use communication techniques. Students also have the opportunity to learn about the cornerstones in American government, understanding a Biblical worldview and constitutional philosophy.

If you know of any young people with a desire to be future leaders, we highly encourage you to send them to Patriot Academy!
