The National Education Association, known as the NEA, held its national convention in New Orleans this summer. The NEA adopts a lot of policies that have nothing whatever to do with education or making the public schools better.
Let me tell you about some of them. The NEA adopted a Legislative Program that calls for --
The United States to provide national, tax-supported, health care for all residents of the U.S., its territories, and Puerto Rico. Statehood for the District of Columbia. Affirmative action to give jobs to minority groups that claim they were discriminated against many years ago. Legislation to study possible reparations to African Americans to address the effects of slavery. The NEA authorizes its lobbyists to oppose the use of voter ID cards for voting in local, state, and national elections, and also to oppose any privatization of Social Security. The NEA also opposes any constitutional amendment to require a balanced budget or to limit tax increases.
These legislative goals are only a small part of the mischief endorsed at the NEA's annual convention. The NEA passed many pro-homosexual, pro-feminist, pro-abortion, and anti-parent resolutions. The NEA's leftwing bias is also obvious in its resolutions calling for public school curricula to include multiculturalism, globalism, environmentalism, diversity, AIDS, sexual orientation, self-esteem, racism, school-to-work, immigration, gun control, suicide, peace, and the United Nations. And the NEA voted to challenge the new Arizona law prohibiting ethnic studies classes that advocate overthrowing the U.S. government with Mexico taking over several of our states. When will parents wake up to who is running the public schools? And when will parents wake up to the power and political influence of the NEA over the curriculum that is taught to their children?
