This week, Phyllis Schlafly and Eagle Forum instigated new advocacy concerning Religious Liberty. The freedom to exercise one's religious beliefs is a right that comes from God, and is guaranteed by the First Amendment of our Constitution. The voices of religious freedom are slowly but surely being strangled in this country, and Eagle Forum is taking action. Illinois Eagle and attorney Sharee Langenstein is spearheading this initiative as Eagle Forum's National Chairman of Religious Liberty.
The entire country has been up in arms for the last three weeks, ever since the Department of Health and Human Services announced its refusal to exempt religious organizations from the Obamacare requirement that all employers provide its employees with free "emergency" abortions, contraception, and sterilizations. This particular mandate primarily affects Catholics, but people of ALL faiths have voiced their opposition to the Obamacare mandates. If the federal government can trample the conscience rights of Americans practicing one religion, it can run over the rights of Americans practicing any faith.
Fortunately, members of both houses of Congress have proposed legislation to correct this atrocity. The bills, which mirror each other, contain two key elements:
First, health care plans, issued or paid for by religious organizations, which do not provide services that violate that organization's religious beliefs, will still count as a "qualified" health care plan and not subject the provider or employer to fines.
Secondly, health plans issued or paid for by INDIVIDUALS, that do not contain objectionable services, will also be exempt from the heavy fines otherwise imposed by Obamacare.
This second provision is every bit as important as the first. The Constitution has always protected an individual right of conscience, not merely a collective right espoused by an organization, such as a church or religion.
The Senate bill is currently in the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. It could be voted on as early as today. We URGE you to contact your own Senators, as well as all members of the Committee and voice your support for S. 1467.
