What Happened to Classes on Geography?

Yesterday I hold you about the uproar in a small Texas town about a lesson in geography class that appeared to justify Islamic terrorism and to call the terrorists "freedom fighters." Today, I'm going to tell you about a town in Tennessee where parents are angry about a textbook used in an Advanced Placement Geography class entitled The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography. According to one parent who spoke at a public meeting said, "This book legitimizes terrorism, calling terrorists 'Freedom Fighters' and making it sound more glamorous than what it is."

Another speaker said that the text called The Cultural Landscape Curriculum -- An Introduction to Human Geography, includes a section called "Why Has Terrorism Increased?" The book answers this question like this: "If a Palestinian suicide bomber kills a dozen Israeli teenagers in a Jerusalem restaurant, is that an act of terrorism or wartime retaliation against Israeli government policies and army actions.?" Some parents have launched a community-wide effort to remove any curriculum from the schools that promotes anti-Semitic views or Arab/Palestinian terrorist aggression against the Jewish community. These parents also want stricter guidelines about the selection of curriculum. A spokesman called on "parents across America to review their children's history and geography textbooks and hold their teachers and school faculty accountable to provide accurate curriculum for their students."

Parents, you might investigate your local school to find out if a course called The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography is being taught to your children. Also brought up during the public comment period was opposition to Common Core Standards, which are now being imposed on the states, and we will be telling you more about this in future broadcasts.
