Some Fresh Air in Hollywood?

Hollywood is not known is not known for strong expressions of faith, but Hollywood just gave us a breath of fresh air. This actor was one of only a few to thank God among many acceptance speeches at this year’s annual Academy Awards ceremony. Here are the words of the man who won the Academy Award for Best Actor this year, Matthew McConaughey. “First off I want to thank God, because that’s who I look up to. He’s graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand.” In his acceptance speech, he also went on to also thank his wife, his children, his mother and his late father.

The reaction to Matthew McConaughey’s remarks on social media was not entirely kind. Some were critical or even angry at how he thanked God for his award. But if someone does not believe in God, why should he be angry when others express their faith? Hollywood would benefit from more religion in its movies, and also from stronger values on a personal level. Earlier this year, a man who won the Best Actor award nearly a decade ago was tragically found dead in his Manhattan apartment at the age of 46, from a suspected drug overdose.

Millions of Americans ignore what Hollywood produces. Two-thirds of Americans had not seen any of the movies nominated for Best Picture this year, according to one poll. Among the many movies nominated for the top award, 67% of Americans had not seen any of them. Most Americans are unhappy with the influence that Hollywood has on our culture and politics. In a recent poll, 61% of Americans said that Hollywood has too much influence. Parents should monitor the choices their children make about movies and make sure they select the good movies, not ones that downgrade positive values.
