Jindal is Right About Assimilation

America is called a "melting pot," where people of all races and creeds join together to form a stable society. This melting pot was created by the assimilation of immigrants into acceptance of our laws, our language, and our culture. For most of our history, we expected a few things from the immigrants who arrived on our shores. Learn English. Obey our laws. And accept our culture. Assimilation made immigrants into Americans.

Today, however, the Left and our ruling elites reject assimilation. They say that teaching our ways to newcomers is racist or imperialist. Instead, they endorse multiculturalism and diversity. They say we can’t judge other cultures because all are equally right. Multiculturalism creates grave dangers to our safety and prosperity, but one important political leader is now speaking out. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, himself the son of immigrants, in a recent speech, pointed out how multiculturalism promotes radical Islam. In several Western countries, there are areas where Muslims refuse to accept local norms. Governor Jindal said, "We have to stop pretending that right and wrong do not exist. Sharia law is not just different from our law, it’s not just a cultural difference, it is oppression and it is wrong ... we must stop pretending otherwise."

Governor Jindal said, "If people don’t want to come here to integrate and assimilate, what they’re really trying to do is . . . overturn our culture." If we don’t assimilate our immigrants, our creed of freedom and opportunity will be split into many factions, including some that are outright dangerous. Bobby Jindal’s own story shows that assimilation benefits all Americans. To preserve the American dream, we should listen to his words.
