American elections have become boring. The leaders of both parties have become aligned with big business interests that want high immigration to supply cheap labor, foreign trade deals to facilitate international business and outsourcing, and foreign wars to justify military spending. Red states reliably vote Republican and blue states vote Democrat. A few months ago, pollsters and pundits were confidently predicting the Nov. 2016 electoral map.
Donald J. Trump threatens to upset all of that, and to re-align our political parties. The establishment Republicans and Democrats have been desperately hoping his campaign would crash after they point out the foolishness of his populist statements. Now they are really scared. Their whole playbook for winning elections just became obsolete.
