500,000 Visa Overstays In 2015

Illegal immigration is too important for the American people to ignore. Donald Trump made it one of the major issues of his presidential campaign. Many conservative favorites have promised to build a wall along the southern border, increase border patrols, and make other important changes. Those are all great ideas. However, sneaking across the border is not the only way that illegal immigrants get into this country. A report from the Department of Homeland Security revealed that more than 500,000 immigrants on temporary visas overstayed their time in our country. That figure does not even include overstays on student visas or workers visas. Thousands of these illegal immigrants came from countries with known terrorist ties such as Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Pakistan, and Libya. In a meeting of the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest, Chairman Jeff Sessions explained: “Visa expiration dates have become optional. The Obama Administration does not believe that violating the terms of your visa should result in deportation. What we are witnessing is tantamount to an open border. Millions are free to come on temporary visas and no one is requiring them to leave.”

Senator Sessions is right to sound the alarm about these disturbing reports. Terrorist attacks on American soil are becoming a great threat. All President Obama wants to do is take away guns from law-abiding citizens. This will not solve the problem. The best way to stop terrorist attacks is to enforce our immigration laws to prevent terrorists from getting here in the first place. I applaud Senator Sessions for holding the Department of Homeland Security accountable. Even one terrorist in the United States has the potential to threaten many American lives. Thousands of illegal immigrants from terrorist countries pose a threat that cannot be ignored. It’s the duty of the Department of Homeland Security to enforce visa expiration dates to protect American lives.
