Celebrating Self-Evident Truths

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These bold words are the reason that we celebrate on this Independence Day. The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents in world history. It set up a new system of government that had never been tried before. Our system of government was founded upon “certain unalienable Rights” which are to be given to all Americans equally. The Declaration is clear that these rights are not given by government. The rights shared by men are “endowed by their Creator.” Because God gave us these rights, government is unable to take them away. This concept was a truly revolutionary idea when our Founding Fathers first used it in 1776.

Sadly, many Americans do not know the reason why we celebrate Independence Day. Public schools purposefully gloss over our nation’s founding documents because they do not want children to see the truth behind America’s founding. Liberal educators do not want children to know that their rights come from God. They want to indoctrinate children into believing that their rights can be taken away at the whim of a few unelected justices on the Supreme Court. That is simply not what our Founding Fathers intended.

Thankfully, we have times set aside like today to remind ourselves of our nation’s rich heritage. Make it your goal to use this Independence Day to commemorate the Declaration of Independence. Tell your children and grandchildren about where their rights truly come from. Every American has a duty to pass on our American traditions of patriotism to their posterity. That is how we can make Independence Day meaningful for our generation and those to come.
