Christian Students Left Speechless

Many universities have oppressive speech policies. These policies are usually vague, broad, and open to abuse in the name of political correctness. North Carolina State University is using this speech policy to limit the rights of Christians on campus. The school’s ridiculous policy says that students or groups must obtain a special permit for “any form of commercial or non-commercial speech.” Students are not even allowed to step out from behind their group’s table to talk with other students about religion. An on-campus club called Grace Christian Life is filing a lawsuit against the college to stop this unconstitutional policy.

Grace Christian Life says that the school is specifically targeting them because they are a Christian group. Their members have seen other clubs completely ignore the rules without any repercussion. The school claims the policy is necessary to create an “inclusive, welcoming environment.” However, their inclusive speech code is being used to exclude this Christian group because of their faith. If the school really wants to be inclusive, it would include Grace Christian Life like all the other student groups on campus.

Unfortunately, this kind of thing is happening all over American college campuses. Student speech is shut down in the name of political correctness. These speech codes should not be allowed on campus. Grace Christian Life president Hannalee Alrutz said “Colleges are supposed to be places where ideas are freely shared – not gagged.” Hannalee is exactly right. Colleges should be preparing students for life, not sheltering them from it. Exposing college students to a diversity of opinions is the best way to help them learn, grow, and develop their own opinions. Oppressive speech codes should be removed to restore free speech for American college students.
